(The Post News)– Newly appointed Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul laid out his four-month agenda in his inaugural speech on Monday. His priorities include addressing the ongoing border conflict with Cambodia and easing economic pressures, among other reforms.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Plans
A month into his new role, Charnvirakul took to parliament to let lawmakers know of his plans to “restore faith and happiness to the Thai people.” A major overhanging issue he addressed was the ongoing conflict with Cambodia, which was recently halted with a ceasefire agreement.
For long-lasting peace, Charnvirakul said he will push for “a referendum on whether Thailand should revoke the existing memorandum of understanding on border issues with Cambodia.” A new referendum would be formed in agreement with Cambodia.
He also said that the government will be relieving economic pressures by tackling increasing mortgages and tackling high electricity, gasoline, and transport, as well as creating measures to lessen the fallouts from trade wars and U.S. tariff policy.
Charnvirakul spoke of plans to crack down on corruption, illegal gambling, and crime while improving green initiatives and natural disaster systems. This should all be expected to be done ahead of his self-imposed 4-month deadline.
The leader of the Bhumjaithai Party promised the People’s Party that he would call general elections in 4 months if they were to support his bid to become prime minister. The progressive party with the most seats in parliament agreed to back him on the condition that he dissolve the House of Representatives and make democratic constitutional amendments.
