(The Post News)– Ten-man Chelsea battled to a narrow 1–0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Benfica in a dramatic UEFA Champions League encounter at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The fixture carried extra weight, as Mourinho, a legend at Chelsea from his two trophy-laden spells in charge, returned to west London in the opposition dugout for the first time with the Portuguese giants. Chelsea came into the clash boasting a flawless head-to-head record against Benfica, with victories in all of their previous five meetings. That dominance was extended when a defensive error proved decisive early on.
In the 18th minute, Richard Rios inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, gifting the Blues a crucial lead. The mistake disrupted Benfica’s early rhythm and forced Mourinho to recalibrate his tactical setup, shifting into a more compact defensive structure to limit further damage.
Benfica Rose to the Occasion Despite Loss
Despite the early blow, Benfica grew into the contest and matched Chelsea stride for stride. Both teams registered 14 total shots, including three on target each, in what was a tightly contested affair. Chelsea edged possession with 57%, creating five corners compared to Benfica’s two, but were unable to add to their advantage despite sustained pressure.
Stamford Bridge remains a fortress that he cannot conquer as a visitor. He has previously failed to beat Chelsea with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, and Benfica’s defeat extends that record. The only time the Portuguese coach successfully eliminated Chelsea from the Champions League came in 2010, when his Inter Milan side knocked out the Blues on their way to lifting the trophy.
Mourinho said, “I will always be a Blue.” Speaking before the match, Mourinho reflected on his Chelsea legacy. “I am still a Blue and will always remain a Blue,” he told reporters.
Mourinho’s bond with the club stretches back to 2004, when he first arrived at Stamford Bridge and cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s most decorated coaches. This time, however, it was Chelsea who prevailed, extending their winning run over Benfica and dampening Mourinho’s latest European campaign.
