(The Post News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to escalate tensions with the United States, should they fulfil their promise to supply Kyiv with Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles.
Speaking at Russia’s annual plenary session forum, Putin dismissed claims that the weapons would make a difference on the battlefield; however, he warned that the supply of said weapons would significantly strain relations with the West, specifically with the US. President Donald Trump has positioned himself as a mediator in peace efforts, arguing that Russia is likely to win the conflict and that Ukraine should prepare to accept giving up land in any negotiated settlement.
While initially praising Trump’s peace efforts, Putin suggests that the US supplying Kyiv would be backtracking and violating its earlier assurances that no U.S. forces would directly take part in the conflict. He said, “Using Tomahawks without the direct participation of American military personnel is impossible,”
At the forum in Sochi, Putin also denied any Russian involvement in Denmark’s recent drone incursion, which happened last week. Instead, he accused NATO of staging the incursion to “inflame tensions” and push for higher defence spending. His comments came shortly after a summit in Copenhagen on 1 October, where European leaders met to discuss regional security against Russian incursions.
The US supplies Kyiv with Long Range Missiles
During the last weeks United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump and Vice President JD Vance said that after a bilateral meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the US has had a change of stance and is now considering supplying Kyiv with Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles.
According to Euro News, a White House official source confirmed this decision was made because Putin had continuously rejected peace deal talks offered by Trump since the August Alaska summit, which ended with no deal. The source adds that Russia’s stance and the US support have harmed the US reputation and economy.
