(The Post News) The South African Police Services (SAPS) Flying Squad in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape has struck a major blow against the illicit drug trade, confiscating drugs valued at nearly R28.7 million and arresting three suspects during a patrol operation in the Coega Industrial area on Thursday, 2 October 2025.
Police on the crime preventing drugs
According to police report, officers were conducting routine crime prevention patrols along the M17 highway when they noticed a white Toyota RAV4 parked on the roadside. Two men were seen carrying large bags from nearby bushes and loading them into the vehicle.
The officers approached the scene and questioned the driver, who claimed to not know what was being placed into his car. Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered three large brown parcels containing dagga, as well as boxes filled with crystal meth and cocaine.
The confiscated drugs included:
- Dagga: 164 kg valued at approximately R21.3 million
- Crystal meth (uncut): 10.1 kg valued at about R2.28 million
- Cocaine: 2.1 kg valued at around R5.09 million
The total estimated street value of the seized drugs stands at R28,698,950.
Three suspects, aged between 35 and 38, were arrested on charges of possession and dealing in drugs. They are expected to appear before the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court soon.
District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata praised the Flying Squad for their vigilance and swift action.“The confiscation of these drugs has undoubtedly prevented them from reaching our communities and destroying lives,” said Major General Ncata. “We will continue to intensify operations targeting drug dealers and organized crime syndicates.”
Ncata further urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by reporting any suspicious activities related to drug dealing or organized crime.
The arrests mark one of the largest drug busts in the Eastern Cape this year, reinforcing the SAPS’s commitment to curbing the spread of illegal substances in local communities.
