(The Post News)- A man in his 40s has died in Donegal, Republic of Ireland. Gardai (Irish Police) believe the fatality is a “weather-related incident” as Storm Amy lashed parts of Ireland and the UK with gale force winds and heavy rain.
Gardai confirmed that the man was pronounced dead at the scene. “Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of a weather related incident at a residence in Letterkenny, County Donegal, on Friday afternoon. A male in his 40s was pronounced deceased. A post mortem will be conducted in due course,” stated Garda spokesperson.
Storm Amy has brought wind speeds of up to 100mph (160kph) in some regions, leaving a trail of damage, flooding, and widespread transport disruption across both Ireland and parts of the UK.
Homes Left Without Electricity Amid Storm Amy
The fatality came as Storm Amy left widespread damage across Ireland, where nearly 120,000 properties remain without electricity.
According to SP Electricity North West, more than 1,000 homes in Cumbria were left without power after a night of destructive winds. Jonny Morgan from SP Electricity North West stated that engineers are working around the clock to restore supply.
“We’ve got our teams out, we’ve got all of our resources available deployed now this morning and we’re doing our best to get people back on as quickly as we can,” Morgan said.
Morgan reported that teams from Lancashire and Greater Manchester had been sent to assist in the restoration effort, with power expected to be fully restored by 20:00 BST.
Reports indicate that a more severe Status Orange warning will take effect for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo between 04:00 and 08:00 on Saturday morning, with the storm causing further power outages and dangerous gusts.
