(The Post News)- Two men were arrested after allegedly assaulting a female police officer during a crime prevention operation in the Kimberley central business district.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, where one of the men attacks the female constable as she carried out her duties on Monday. In the video, the man is seen pulling off the officer’s weave while members of the public try to intervene. Shortly, a second police vehicle arrives to assist the officer under attack.
Police Commissioner Condemned The Incident
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien reported that the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, has strongly condemned the incident.
Gamieldien also confirmed that two men were arrested at the scene by other members of the SAPS crime prevention team. The suspects are facing charges of assaulting a police official, resisting arrest, defeating the ends of justice, and malicious damage to property.
She continued to add that the assaulted officer sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment. She is also receiving counselling and debriefing through the SAPS Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) unit.
Otola reiterated that the police service will not tolerate attacks on its members. “No one is above the law. Those who attack our officers will face the full might of the law. An attack on police officials is a direct attack on the state,” she said.
