(The Post News) – Close to 27 people have died and others remain missing after heavy rainfall triggered landslides and floods across several regions of Mexico, sweeping away homes, vehicles, and bridges.
The authorities have reported that torrential rainfall on Thursday and Friday caused rivers to overflow. Hidalgo in east Mexico was one of the most affected areas, with 16 deaths reported. Thousands of houses have been destroyed as fast-moving floodwaters tore through the streets, overturning cars and leaving highways blocked with debris.
Electricity has been cut off in many communities, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
Mexico President Highlights Areas Affected by Floods
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said the federal government has mobilized 5,400 personnel to support local authorities, clear blocked roads, and distribute aid. “We are working to support the population, open roads and restore electrical service,” Sheinbaum said.
In addition, 3,300 naval troops have been deployed to assist with evacuations and cleanup operations.
In the central state of Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta confirmed that at least nine people had died and five others were still missing. He said an estimated 80,000 residents have been affected by the disaster in Puebla alone.
The state of Veracruz also reported two fatalities. Residents in the affected areas described scenes of chaos and destruction as floodwaters surged through their neighborhoods. “No one was prepared for this.
“The flood reached a height of one and a half meters. Everything was flooded, the dining room and the entire restaurant, the kitchen, the bathroom, the games room, the private area. Everything is in terrible condition,” said Jose Cervantes, owner of a coffee shop in one of the affected areas.
According to meteorologists more rain is expected over the weekend.
