(The Post News)-Nine students arrested for alleged public violence at the University of the Free State (UFS) appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court earlier on Friday, 10 October 2025.
Police spokesperson Lt. Col. Thabo Covane reported that the court granted bail to the students on the condition that they stay away from campus premises until the conclusion of the case. Provisions were also made for those students residing on campus to find alternative accommodation.
“The court case will resume on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court,” said Covane. The students were arrested on Thursday during protests following the university’s announcement that it had stopped provisional registration. Reports indicated that the decision affects students across all three UFS campuses.
UFS SRC Confirms Discussions with the University
Student Representative Council (SRC) member Elizabeth Thulo has confirmed that discussions with university management are underway. “Currently, there is an ongoing meeting with the SRC to re-discuss the issue of provisional registration. So, we are yet to receive an update after 12 o’clock. Right now, there is nothing happening on campus. It’s a bit calm.
“So, then we will have a way forward after we receive communication from the SRC about what’s going to happen afterwards,” Thulo said.
