(The Post News) – One of the team’s new members is Grant De Jager, a 21-year-old from Barberton, Mpumalanga. In September, he formally joined the squad, and for the past month, he has been fulfilling a lifelong ambition.
With a strong emphasis on protecting their HSBC SVNS Cape Town championship, the Springbok Sevens have put each other into a demanding regimen of exercise as the 2026 tournament draws near. DHL Stadium will host the sole tournament in South Africa on December 6 and 7. Ticketmaster is the only way to purchase tickets, which start at just R250.
Before playing for FNB Maties in the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup, the mysterious outside back played for DHL Western Province at the U19 and U21 levels. He is presently a B.Sc. student at Stellenbosch University.
According to De Jager, “I’ve had faith in hard work. I take pleasure in my efforts to surpass everybody else within the field.” He saw the Springbok Sevens team’s identical work ethic right away. “The first thing that caught my attention was how strongly everyone challenges themselves no one holds back.”
De Jager remembers clearly the first time his dream began to take shape. At the age of 13, he made the decision to participate for the Springbok Sevens while seeing the 2016 Rio Olympics. It couldn’t have ended better for De Jager’s sevens debut.
The agreement for him was secured in June when he was instrumental in the Springbok Sevens ‘A’ team’s triumph at the Rugby Africa Sevens in Mauritius. He never thought he’d be on the very same team in the near future. It would be an honor to represent South Africa in our event, but I haven’t scheduled my parents’ trips yet.
This week, the Springbok Sevens will meet Germany again in the same format as their previous six preseason games, which were played on Thursday and Friday. De Jager enjoyed every second of the experience while playing for the Pumas during the 2022 FNB Craven Week.
“Playing with these guys makes you realize how good they are,” he remarked, grinning.
