(The Post News)- ensions increased at the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Qwaqwa campus on Monday, 13 October 2025, after security personnel allegedly assaulted students participating in protests over the ending of provisional registrations for 2026.
According to a video circulating on social media, UFS security guards are seen assaulting a student. An anonymous student described the scene as chaotic and terrifying.
“They came at us with batons and shields. We were not violent; we were just chanting and holding placards. Now people are injured,” said a student.
The student added that it is sad that we were witnessing that brutal act, but at the end of the day the university management and the SRC said we should not retaliate. “How can you not retaliate when such things are happening? They are killing us,” stated the student.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that six more students who were arrested early on Saturday morning were granted bail. The students aged between 19 and 24 were allegedly arrested on charges of malicious damage to property and attempted arson.
