(The Post News) – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across parts of the north-eastern Lowveld in Mpumalanga.
According to SAWS, residents can expect strong, damaging winds, small hail, and excessive lightning throughout Thursday, 16 October 2025. The warning comes as unstable atmospheric conditions intensify over the region.
SAWS issued a Yellow Level 2 Warning for Mpumalang as severe thunderstorms are predicted. Residents in areas including Mbombela can expect strong damaging winds, large hail or small hail over large open areas, along with localised flooding in vulnerable areas such as roads, bridges, and settlements.
“Motorists and residents are urged to take extra precautions, especially in areas prone to flooding or reduced visibility,” said SAWS.
There is also a high risk of excessive lightning. The forecast indicates a 60% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms in these regions, highlighting the severity of the storm threat.
Emergency services across the province remain on alert as authorities monitor the situation closely. Residents have been advised to avoid crossing swollen rivers or walking on flooded roads.
SAWS reported that the weather is expected to persist into the evening before gradually clearing overnight.
