(The Post News)- Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu appeared to struggle answering when asked if President Cyril Ramaphosa had approved the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema repeatedly asked him, “Did the president agree to the disbandment of the PKTT?” Mchunu, however, hesitated before providing a clear response.
He eventually replied, “Yes,” admitting to the committee that President Ramaphosa was indeed aware of the PKKT disbandment. He clarified that before the decision to disband the task team was put into action, Ramaphosa was fully informed and supported the decision. “I sought an appointment, and it was granted,” Mchunu said.
He added, “I went to present that I had made this decision in December last year. I don’t recall the exact date, but it was either January or February. I am prepared to check.” Moreover, he defended the decision as part of normal administrative processes, explaining that “the task team was a temporary structure and not an official part of the SAPS.
“The decision was made to address dysfunction within the unit and to redirect resources towards broader crime prevention efforts,” ”he added. The suspended minister of police is expected to return to Parliament on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, to face further questioning from MPs as the inquiry into the matter continues.
