(The Post News) – Ongoing Investigation into Businessman Linked to Suspended Minister Mchunu and other alleged criminal Syndicates
Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi, a businessman from the North West, has voiced serious concerns about his safety after a police raid on his company’s location in Seweding village, Mahikeng, on Thursday night.
The alleged “political fixer” whose name has come up time and time again in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and a parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee looking into political meddling and corruption in the criminal justice system is the subject of an ongoing investigation, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Why the Business, Not the Home?
Police have not formally explained why they chose to target the company property instead of Mogotsi’s residence, but it seems to be a search and seizure operation connected to the ongoing investigations.
The police presence was connected to investigations that had already been discussed before the Ad Hoc Committee and the Madlanga Commission, according to police spokesman Athlenda Mathe. Mogotsi himself informed the media that the warrant was being used to seize digital devices that belonged to him, suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, and Cedric Nkabinde, Mchunu’s chief of staff.
Mogotsi told eNCA that after the raid, he fears for his life. Additionally, he expressed his concerns to SABC News about the group of more than 20 officers who were holding assault guns and wearing balaclavas. Despite his fear, Mogotsi was defiant. He confirmed he would be appearing before the Madlanga Commission.
Central to Corruption Allegations
Mogotsi plays a significant role in the allegations made by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who claimed the businessman was a “associate” of Minister Mchunu and had intimate knowledge of police activities.
- Mchunu Connection: Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who was suspended, acknowledged that he knew Mogotsi but disputed that he was an associate, calling him a “comrade.” On the same day of the raid, Mchunu informed the Ad Hoc Committee that he was the only one who wrote the letter dissolving the contentious Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), a unit he maintained was never included on the SAPS organisational chart.
- Syndicate Links: According to testimony, Mogotsi was associated with Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, a controversial businessman who is accused of attempted murder and was involved in the plunder of Tembisa Hospital. According to evidence, Matlala was allegedly paying Mogotsi directly to cover ANC-related expenses, and Mogotsi is accused of using his position of power to block an investigation into Matlala.
- Shadrack Sibiya, the suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner, informed the Ad Hoc Committee earlier this week that Mogotsi had contacted him in late 2024 to discuss allegations of tender corruption and to inform him that he was under investigation by Crime Intelligence.
Mogotsi has requested more time from the Madlanga Commission to consult his legal team before testifying.
