(The Post News)– The Proteas extended their dominant form at the 2025 Women’s World Cup, cruising to a 10-wicket victory over Sri Lanka with 31 balls remaining at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday, October 17.
The win, the Proteas’ fourth in a row, solidified their position in the semi-final race, lifting them to second place on the points table with eight points. It marks an impressive turnaround after their early stumble against England, when they were bowled out for just 69. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, remains winless and now faces a must-win situation in their final two matches to keep their campaign alive.
Sri Lanka’s innings got off to an unsteady start when Vishmi Gunaratne was struck on the left knee by a throw from mid-on and had to be stretchered off. Hasini Perera, her substitute, managed just four runs before falling to Masabata Klaas, while captain Chamari Athapaththu continued to struggle, dismissed for 11. The hosts were 46/2 in the 12th over when rain interrupted play for more than five hours, resulting in the match being shortened to 20 overs per side.
When play resumed, Nonkululeko Mlaba led the Proteas’ bowling attack superbly, claiming three wickets as Sri Lanka was restricted to 105 for 7. In reply, Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits produced a flawless partnership, guiding South Africa to victory in just 14.5 overs.
