(The Post News) – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has urged residents to brace for potentially dangerous weather across several provinces. Yellow Level 2 and 4 warnings have been issued for the central and eastern regions.
Reports indicate that widespread scattered thundershowers are expected to bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, and excessive lightning, posing a risk of localised flooding. SAWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Johannesburg on Monday, 20 October 2025 as rain continues to fall across most parts of the city.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Kagiso Phasha urged residents to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel as conditions worsen. “Drivers are advised to slow down, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid flooded roads and bridges.
“Residents are urged to remain alert, follow official updates from the South African Weather Service, Johannesburg EMS, and report any emergencies by calling 011 375 5911 or 112,” Phasha stated.
Phasha added that Johannesburg residents should stay indoors where possible, avoid low-lying areas, and exercise caution on slippery roads as emergency services remain on high alert.
According to SAWS similar conditions are expected in the North West, Free State, and northern parts of the Northern Cape, where severe thunderstorms could result in localised damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, property, vehicles, and livestock. In the western parts of the North West, storms are expected to cause flooding of roads and low-lying areas, leading to the closure of bridges and roadways and potential loss of agricultural production.
SAWS reported that residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and take all necessary safety precautions.
