(The Post News) – A terrifying tragedy on the R524 road west of Thohoyandou early yesterday morning claimed six lives, making it the third significant deadly traffic accident in Limpopo in as short a week.
After the terrible bus accident last Sunday, the incident unfortunately takes the total number of deaths on the province’s roadways to around 50 in a terrible seven-day period.
Details of the Thohoyandou Tragedy
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle lost control and drove off the road, scattering passengers across the scene near the Thulamela Municipality, according to the Limpopo Department of Transport.
At the scene, four passengers died instantly. After being taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, the driver and another individual passed away from their wounds, making six people dead overall. One passenger remains hospitalised.
“The exact cause of the crash will be confirmed once investigations are complete,” said acting transport spokesperson Matome Tauetsoala.
MEC Expresses Condolences Amidst Safety Push
Violet Mathye, MEC for Community Safety and Transportation in the Limpopo province, said she was deeply saddened by the loss.
“On behalf of the Department of Transport and Community Safety and the people of Limpopo, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who perished and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said MEC Mathye.
As safety initiatives are stepped up during Transport Month, the recent wave of continuous fatalities has highlighted the urgent need for increased attention on the province’s roads.
“Drivers are once more urged to be vigilant as they continue with their journeys to different destinations,” Mathye urged, adding that law enforcement officers will continue to be deployed across the province to monitor road safety and enforce compliance with traffic regulations.
