(The Post News) – A local school in Pretoria, Soshanguve is facing investigation following a viral social media post that alleged multiple teachers being involved in inappropriate, romantic relationships with learners.
The post, which included alleged private text messages and photos between two male teachers and learners of Kondelelani Junior Secondary School, ignited public backlash and prompted intervention from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).
Furthermore, the post allegedly read, “As learners of Kondelelani, we would like to be heard about the ongoing problem of teachers dating school learners. We have female leaners dropping out of school because of being harassed by two male teachers without being heard. We have finally had enough and would like for our voices to be heard. Kondelelani Secondary School is no longer safe for female learners because of these two teachers.”
The allegations involve a serious breach of the South African Council for Educators (SACE) Code of Professional Ethics, which strictly prohibits romantic or sexual relationships between educators and learners.
Such conduct, particularly involving minors, constitutes a criminal offence.
GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona said the department has acknowledged the severity of the claims and has launched an investigation.
“The matter has been brought to our attention and can confirm that the department has launched necessary investigations,” he said.
He then said further actions to be taken will be determined by the outcome of the investigations.
Moreover, parents and community members have expressed their fury over the allegations, emphasizing the alleged conduct as a betrayal of the children’s safety.
“We send our children to school to learn, not to be preyed upon. Teachers are supposed to be second parents to our children,” said concerned resident, Thandiwe Sibisi.
