(The Post News)– Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that Brandon Petersen is the club’s new captain, following the departure of Yusuf Maart at the start of the season.
Over the weeks, the captain’s armband had been shared between Zitha Kwinika and Inacio Miguel, but Petersen was seen leading the team during Wednesday night’s goalless draw against Siwelele at FNB Stadium, a result that stretched Amakhosi’s winless run in the league to four matches. Speaking after the match, co-coach Cedric Kaze explained the decision: “As the technical staff, we have decided to appoint Petersen as the club captain going forward,” said Kaze.
This is not Petersen’s first time wearing the armband. The 30-year-old goalkeeper, who joined Chiefs from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in 2021, has often been seen as one of the team’s natural leaders. He’s also made history recently, becoming the first Chiefs goalkeeper since Itumeleng Khune in 2018 to keep five consecutive clean sheets.
The appointment is seen as a sign of trust in Petersen’s leadership and consistency during a challenging spell for the Soweto giants. However, it has also sparked questions about why Inacio Miguel was relieved of the captaincy. Despite the team’s current struggles in terms of goals, Kaze believes there are positives to take. “Our style of play is coming together, and the performances are improving. We just need to be more clinical in finishing our chances,” he said.
