(The Post News)- The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned residents across parts of Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the central interior of South Africa to prepare for a stormy Tuesday, 28 October 2025, as severe thunderstorms are expected to develop over large areas across the country.
According to SAWS, the thunderstorms are likely to bring heavy downpours, strong gusty winds, and small hail, posing potential risks to both people and property. The weather service warned that low-lying regions, roads, and bridges may see localized floods, and homes and informal settlements may sustain structural damage from hail and destructive winds.
“Authorities have also warned of falling trees and flying debris, which may result in travel disruptions and power outages,” SAWS said in the statement.
Heavy Rainfall in Some Parts of the Country
Rainfall probabilities remain high across much of the country’s interior. Widespread thunderstorms with a 60% chance of rain are forecast for parts of the Northwest, Free State, Gauteng, and central Limpopo, while scattered showers with a 30% chance are expected over surrounding areas, including the eastern Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
SAWS added that the southern and western provinces, including the Western Cape, are expected to remain mostly dry. “Thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon, intensify into the evening, and, in some areas, persist overnight,” reads the statement.
Emergency services have urged motorists and residents to remain vigilant, avoid flooded roadways, and secure outdoor items that could be blown away by strong winds. “We’re urging the public to exercise caution and stay indoors where possible. These thunderstorms can develop rapidly and bring damaging conditions,” SAWS said.
Residents are advised to monitor official updates from SAWS and local disaster management centers as conditions evolve throughout the day.
