(The Post News)– The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms expected to develop over parts of the Free State on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, afternoon and evening. Residents are being urged to brace for heavy downpours, excessive lightning, strong gale-force winds, and possible small hail, which could cause localized damage and disruptions.
According to SAWS, the storm system may result in localized flooding of susceptible roads, informal settlements, and low-lying areas, as well as damage to infrastructure, power lines, and property. Motorists have been warned to exercise caution, as slippery road surfaces, reduced visibility, and falling debris could make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
“Residents should take necessary precautions, such as avoiding open fields and tall trees during lightning strikes, and ensuring that gutters and drainage systems are cleared to reduce flood risks,” SAWS said in a statement.
SAWS added that the most intense storms are expected over the central and eastern parts of the province, with isolated thunderstorm activity possible elsewhere. Emergency services across the province have been placed on alert to respond to weather-related incidents.
Authorities have urged the public to stay indoors during severe storms, avoid crossing flooded areas, and monitor official SAWS updates through verified channels. With the possibility of power outages and travel disruptions, residents are also advised to keep mobile devices charged and to have emergency supplies readily available.
The warning remains in effect until late Wednesday evening.
