(The Post News) – The Ad HOC Committee is set to investigate allegations made on the 6th July 2025, by South African Police Service’s (SAPS) KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanzi, engaging with Deputy Police Minister, Honourable Cassel Mathale.
On Tuesday, 28th October 2025, evidence was presented to evidence leader, Norman Arendse, and Committee spent the afternoon and evening discussing it.
Mathale told the Committee that he was concerned over the part where he specified as “immediately” in reference to the closure.
He was not in the position to dispute the effectiveness of the PKTT, however, he did support the winding down of the PKTT, for reasons such as ensuring police resources were evenly deployed in investigating serious crimes like robbery and murder.
Committee members raised a particular concern pertaining a year into Mathale’s tenure in the 7th administration, both Deputy Ministers of Police had not been given delegated responsibilities.
Mathale susbstantiated that Mchunu was still in the process of familiarising himself with the environment before assigning responsibilities and tasks to his Deputies.
Hon Mathale had rejected evidence earlier on that majority of officials in departments or ministries might have engaged with murder accused Vusmuzi “Cat’ Matlala or other known criminals.
He specified that he is no possession of contact number of such individuals due to his deployment to a ministry whos mandate is combat crime. It is therefore, inappropriate to engage on a social level with questionable individuals.
Ad HOC Committee’s oral hearings are expected to resume on the 4th November 2025, with the other Deputy Minister of Police, Dr Polly Boshielo.
The Committee had established that in terms of the National Assembly Ryle 253, was formed to investigate allegations made by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The Committee had been given a deadline until the 28th November 2025 for their mandate completion.
