(The Post News) – United States (US) President Donald Trump has halted refugee arrivals after taking office in January 2025, however, he had made an exception for white South Africans irrespective of Pretoria’s insistence they do not face persecution in their homeland.

Trump’s administration made an announcement on Thursday, 30th October 2025, regarding the implementation of drastic cut back on the number of refugees the country is willing to accommodate on an annual basis. Preference is set to be given to white South Africans refugees.
There has been no particular reason given to explain the specific number, which are claimed to be a dramatic decrease from 2024’s ceiling of 125 000 set under Democratic, Joe Bidden.
The majority of refugees being accepted during the fiscal year which had begun on the 1st October 2025 would be white South African individuals and/or other “victims of injustice in their homelands”, according to the White House memo.
The White House memo states the following: “The admissions number shall primarily be allocated among Afrikaners from South Africa.”
President Donald Trump had repeatedly mentioned that white South Africans are being persecuted in the black majority. This is a claim that was publicly rejected by the South African Government and top Afrikaner officials.
The first group of Afrikaner refugees were 50 in total and described as the descendants of the first European settlers of South Africa, they had arrived in May 2025.
Refugees resettlement grants and contracts that are currently undergoing an array of public and private organisations, will instead be redirected to the Office of Refugee Resettlement in the Department of Health and Human Services.
Senior fellow member of the American Immigration Council, Mr Aaron Reichlin-Melnick mentioned that since the year 1980, more than two million individuals that have fled persecution have been admitted into the US under the programme.
Reichlin-Melnick stated: “Now it will be used as a pathway for white immigration. What a downnfall for a crown jewel of America’s international humanitarian programs.”
