(The Post News)- The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned residents of the Western Cape and Northern Cape to brace for blistering weather conditions today, with temperatures expected to reach a sweltering 40°C in several areas.
Parts of the Kamiesberg Municipality in the Northern Cape and the interior of the West Coast District are expected to experience higher than usual temperatures. SAWS reported that there will be hot to extremely hot and uncomfortable weather conditions over the interior of the Western Cape and the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape.
The intense heat follows a string of warmer days across the region, prompting concerns about heat-related illnesses and increased fire danger in dry and windy areas. SAWS has urged residents to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity.
“People are advised to take precautions, especially the elderly, children, and those with existing health conditions. Farmers and outdoor workers should plan their activities for early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat stress,” SAWS said in a statement.
SAWS added that citizens in those affected regions are urged to drink a lot of water, as high temperatures can cause dehydration.
While the northern and interior regions of the provinces will experience extreme temperatures, coastal areas such as Cape Town are expected to remain mild, reaching a high of 23°C with strong southerly winds gusting up to 63 km/h during the day.
Authorities have also cautioned that persistent high temperatures may increase the risk of wildfires, particularly in regions with dry vegetation and strong winds sweeping through the interior.
