(The Post News) – In Sunday afternoon’s Betway Premiership match at Mbombela Stadium, Stellenbosch FC lost 2-0 to TS Galaxy, suffering their sixth loss of the year.
Galaxy moved up to sixth on the log after scoring one in each half to guarantee a spot in the top eight. Stellies, who have only won twice all season, finished in 14th place with just nine points from ten games.
Following their elimination from the Carling Knockout quarterfinals, both clubs were eager to win the game. The previous Sunday, Galaxy had lost to Golden Arrows 2-1, and on Wednesday night, Marumo Gallants crushed Stellenbosch 4-0.
Seluleko Mahlambi’s goal in the seventh minute gave the home team an incredible start. Stellenbosch made a strong push for an equalizer in the twelfth minute, but Galaxy goalkeeper Ira Tape stopped them. Stellenbosch was desperate to escape the relegation zone.
Mpho Mvelase nearly increased Galaxy’s advantage a few moments later, but Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens quickly intervened. Despite their persistent efforts, the visitors trailed 1-0 at halftime.
When Junior Zindoga’s attempt was cleared off the line early in the second half, Galaxy almost increased their lead. In the 58th minute, Tape saved the day once more, stopping Lehlohonolo Mojela with an incredible save.
When Sanele Barns unintentionally scored an own goal in the 62nd minute after the ball bounced off the crossbar, drama ensued. Both teams made late attempts, but Galaxy persevered to win 2-0.
