(The Post News)- Three South African clubs were put in difficult groups for this year’s CAF Interclub Competitions after the draw they had in Johannesburg, on Monday.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ placement in a tough Group C of the CAF Champions League set up a much-anticipated reunion with their previous coach, Rulani Mokwena, who is currently in charge of MC Alger of Algeria. Al Hilal SC from Sudan, a consistent force in African football, and Lupopo from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the same team that ended the Orlando Pirates’ continental run, are also members of the group.
Kaizer Chiefs will play two Egyptian powerhouses, Zamalek and Al Masr, as well as Zesco United from Zambia in the challenging Group D of the CAF Confederation Cup. To compete against teams with a strong continental heritage, Chiefs will need to play at their highest level.
Stellenbosch FC, who made an impression by making it to the semi-finals the previous season, will play in Group C with Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad. The Western Cape team will strive for another deep run in the competition by building on their prior achievements.
The stakes are higher in every game because only the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The CAF Interclub group stage, which is scheduled to begin later in November, promises thrilling football and fierce contests as South Africa’s representatives compete to establish themselves on the continental scene.
