(The Post News)- Despite having been down to ten players early in the game, South Africa’s under-17 football team defeated Bolivia 3-1 in Doha, Qatar, to kick off their FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Amajimbos’ passionate performance demonstrated their character, tenacity, and tactical maturity, giving supporters hope that this youthful team could advance far in the competition.
After making it to the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations in Morocco earlier this year, Amajimbos secured their spot in the international competition. This accomplishment already demonstrated the team’s development and potential. The South Africans carried that energy into the World Cup, pressing hard and controlling play from the opening whistle. Their speed and accuracy unnerved Bolivia’s defense, leading to multiple mistakes and early scoring opportunities.
However, Amajimbos only had ten players on the field, as right defender Sive Pama was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. This was an early blow for the team. The younger South Africans reacted with determination and focus rather than losing their cool. Emile Witbooi of Cape Town City broke the impasse with a skillfully executed goal just two minutes later, giving South Africa an early advantage and establishing the tone for a strong performance.
The Amajimbos persisted in their bold attacks in spite of their numerical disadvantage. Despite creating numerous opportunities, they were unable to increase their lead before halftime. However, Bolivia was unable to establish a rhythm or confidence in the game due to their discipline and togetherness.
Neo Bohloko, a young player from Kaizer Chiefs and one of the best players in the Diski Challenge, extended South Africa’s lead with a composed finish after halftime. His goal demonstrated the team’s constant belief as much as individual excellence. Bolivia surged back, challenging goalkeeper Lwandiso Radebe multiple times, and finally managing to bring victory in the 70th minute with a penalty.
Nevertheless, South Africa did not concede. With an additional strike in the final minute, the boys finished the game with a commanding 3-1 victory, continuing their aggressive intent. Amajimbos’ three-point victory put them atop Group A and sent a clear warning to their opponents.
The youthful South Africans will want to continue with their assured start and get closer to earning a position in the next phase when they take on the hosts, Qatar, on Thursday.
