(The Post News)– A passenger train collided with a cargo train in central India, killing at least 11 people and injuring several others in a tragic accident near Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.
On Tuesday night, November 4, the local passenger train crashed into a stationary goods train from behind near Bilaspur, about 115 kilometers northeast of Raipur.
Rescue teams completed their operation early Wednesday, and trains have resumed movement through the accident site.
Government Response
According to senior government official Sanjay Agarwal, one of the passenger carriages was thrown on top of a cargo wagon due to the force of the impact.
Agarwal reported that the passenger train’s driver was among the deceased, while the female co-pilot sustained critical injuries and was hospitalized at a private facility. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and rescue operations continued through the night.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with local police and railway personnel, worked to extract passengers trapped in the wreckage. Authorities confirmed that at least 11 passengers lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries, some of them critical.
The exact number of injured is still being verified, but local hospitals have been placed on alert to receive victims. Families of the deceased have been notified, and compensation packages are expected to be announced by the government.
Investigations Underway
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao told reporters that the goods train was not moving when the passenger train struck it from the rear, causing damage to its front carriages.
Preliminary reports suggest that a signaling error or miscommunication may have led to the passenger train failing to stop in time. Indian Railways has launched a formal inquiry to determine the exact circumstances and prevent future incidents. This tragedy comes amid ongoing concerns about railway safety in India, which operates one of the largest rail networks in the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his sympathies to the families of the victims and urged a comprehensive probe into the incident. Transport authorities have pledged prompt measures and assistance for those impacted.
