(The Post News) – FC Barcelona defender Eric Garcia has suffered a broken nose following a fierce clash during his side’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Club Brugge on Wednesday night.
The Spanish centre-back, currently on loan from Girona FC, was forced off late in the second half after a heavy collision while contesting an aerial ball. Initial scans confirmed that Garcia sustained a nasal fracture, though the player is said to be in stable condition and recovering well.
Barcelona medical staff announced early Thursday that the 24-year-old defender will undergo further evaluation to determine whether surgery will be required or if he can play with a protective mask in the upcoming fixtures.
However the club statement confirmed that Garcia has suffered a nasal fracture, he will be fitted with a musk and his recovery will determine his availability for the upcoming games. These incident causes a dent at Hansi Flick’s defense-line.
The incident occurred during a tense 3-3 draw against Club Brugge, a match that saw Lamine Yamal putting a super-man performance for Barcelona’s equalizer after the Belgian side took a surprise first-half lead. Garcia’s injury briefly halted play as medical personnel treated him before he was substituted to applause from the home crowd.
Barcelona fans expressed concern and support for the young defender, who has been one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers in Europe this season. His leadership and defensive positioning have been key to the team’s campaign as they aim to secure qualification to the Champions League knockout stage.
Barcelona’s medical team will provide an update ahead of their next La Liga match this weekend, with manager Hansi Flick reportedly considering rotation in defense as the squad manages a growing list of injuries.
