Amajimbos earned their place at the World Cup earlier in 2025 after finishing as runners-up in their group at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Under the guidance of head coach Vela Khumalo, the young South Africans displayed impressive consistency and resilience during qualification.
Khumalo, speaking after qualification, said that reaching the World Cup was the team’s main goal and expressed pride in his players for their hard work and discipline. At the World Cup, South Africa were drawn into Group A alongside hosts Qatar, Italy, and Bolivia.
The Amajimbos began their campaign in style, beating Bolivia 3–1 in their opening match, with goals from Emile Witbooi, Neo Bohloko, and Shaun Els. They followed that up with a determined 1–1 draw against Qatar, putting them in a strong position to qualify. Despite a 3–1 loss to Italy in their final group game, the Amajimbos finished second in the group with four points, enough to progress to the knockout rounds for the first time.
The team’s qualification for the last 32 has been celebrated across South Africa as a landmark moment for youth football. It demonstrates that the structures put in place to identify and nurture young talent are beginning to yield results. The players’ determination, tactical awareness, and self-belief have been praised by analysts and fans alike. Coach Khumalo noted after their progression that while there were still areas to improve particularly in front of goal, he was immensely proud of the team’s spirit and growth throughout the tournament.
Several players have stood out during the campaign. Emile Witbooi’s creativity and leadership have been crucial in attack, while Shaun Els has emerged as a reliable goal scorer. Neo Bohloko’s composure in midfield has also earned plaudits, highlighting the depth of talent within the squad. The Amajimbos’ performances have shown a balance between disciplined defending and fluid attacking play, attributes that have earned them respect from their international opponents.
While the journey to the knockout stages is a historic accomplishment, the challenge ahead is even greater. The Amajimbos will face stronger and more experienced opposition in the next round, and maintaining their composure and tactical discipline will be key. However, regardless of the outcome, their success in Qatar has already inspired a generation of young footballers back home and injected fresh optimism into the nation’s football future.
