(The Post News) – Manchester City delivered a ruthless reminder of their Premier League dominance with a 3–0 demolition of Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium last night, sending an ominous message to their title rivals.
The club delivered a deafening statement of intent to celebrate Pep Guardiola’s landmark 1,000th match in management as Liverpool were dismissed out of hand at Etihad Stadium. Guardiola stated that he just want to thank the players, backroom staff to give him that present. “I’m proud to do it here in Manchester with my City,” he said.
Guardiola’s men, who have faced questions over consistency in recent weeks, produced a performance of breathtaking precision and control a blend of technical brilliance and relentless intensity that left Liverpool chasing shadows for much of the encounter.
City failed to score an opening goal when Goorgi Mardashvili saved a Halaand’s penalty after a rare defensive lapse, but from there, it was one-way traffic. Erling Haaland opened the scoring with a thunderous strike from Matheus Nunes’s pinpoint delivery at 29 minutes of the game, giving City an early lead.
At 45’ plus Bernardo Silva gave an assist to Nico Gonzales who restored City’s advantage with a curling effort moments before halftime, and second-half strike from Jeremy Doku supplies by Nico O’reilly sealing a victory for the Blues that felt every bit like a statement of intent.
Liverpool defeat was a sobering experience, Arne Slot’s side who started the English Premiership Leagues (EPL) on a bad foot, were outplayed in every department. Midfield control usually Liverpool’s strength evaporated under City’s high press, and defensive frailties resurfaced at the worst possible time.
The “you will never walk alone” men have had a very poor performance with only one shot at target for the whole game. Virgil Van Dijk tried his luck to put the game at stalemate by 39 minutes but failed to to his goal overruled by Virtual assistant Referee (VAR).
Guardiola praised his side’s mentality and rhythm, noting, “When we play like this, it is difficult for anyone to stop us. The players were incredible every pass, every movement had purpose.”
Klopp, meanwhile, admitted his side were second best all over the pitch, calling for a reaction ahead of their upcoming clash against Tottenham. With the win, City is four points behind Arsenal in a race to reclaim top spot, reminding the league that the champions are far from relinquishing their crown quietly.
