Argentine media stated that Milei’s decision shows solidarity with Washington. The government has not released an official statement, but reports suggest that the move is “in line with the U.S. position.” The choice is seen as a diplomatic setback for South Africa. Hosting the G20 for the first time, and the first time the summit takes place on African soil.
Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico are the only Latin American members of the G20. Analysts say Milei’s stance reflects his administration’s strong alignment with the U.S. and a shift away from multilateral cooperation.
Trump’s boycott has drawn criticism from Pretoria. South Africa’s government called the claims of violence against white farmers “false and inflammatory.”
The G20 summit will run from November 22 to 23 in Johannesburg. Discussions will center on global economic recovery, financial reform, and energy transition. Leaders from China, India, and Brazil have confirmed attendance.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation has not yet commented publicly on Milei’s decision.
