(The Post News) – Google is making a major move in Texas with a planned 40 billion dollar investment. Google will build three new data center campuses by 2027.
The initiative underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its artificial intelligence. They are planning to also expand cloud infrastructure in a state that has become central to tech growth.
The new facilities will be located in Armstrong County in the Texas Panhandle and two in Haskell County near Abilene. One of the Haskell sites will be paired with a solar and battery energy storage plant. This setup is designed to reduce strain on the local power grid.
Alphabet and Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said the investment will support the growth of AI computing. They while also generating thousands of jobs and providing skills training across Texas. The company plans to train more than 1,700 apprentices by 2030 through partnerships with electrical training programs.
Energy sustainability is a core part of the plan. Google has pledged a 30 million dollar Energy Impact Fund to support community energy efficiency initiatives, and the company has signed agreements for more than 6,200 megawatts of new energy generation and capacity in Texas. The new buildings will also use advanced air cooling systems to limit water consumption.
Google is making another environmental commitments through a 2.6 million dollar contribution to wetlands restoration and two million dollars in grants to support agricultural projects.
Texas governor Greg Abbott praised the announcement. He outlined it as one of the largest tech infrastructure commitments in the state’s history. He said the project highlights Texas as a national leader in AI development. He emphasized that the investment strengthens both the state’s economy and the country’s position in the global AI race.
The move comes at a time when companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon. These staekholders are heavily expanding their data center capacity to meet rising demand for AI services. Industry analysts note that while the investment positions Google competitively. They also raise questions about long-term electricity demand and grid capacity. Analysts warn that AI compute needs will continue to grow rapidly.
