(The Post News)- Germany thrashed Slovakia 6-0 on Monday night to secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Germany is capping off a turbulent qualifying campaign with their most dominant performance to date.
The match in Leipzig saw the hosts overwhelm Slovakia from the opening whistle, leaving no doubt about their intentions.Germany struck first in the 18th minute when Nick Woltemade headed in from a set piece. Serge Gnabry added a second soon after, finishing calmly after a well-timed pass from Leon Goretzka.
Before Slovakia had time to recover, Leroy Sané struck twice in quick succession. His first goal came from a curling effort in the 36th minute. His second just five minutes later, both assisted by Florian Wirtz. By halftime, Germany were firmly in control with a 4-0 lead.

The second half brought more measured but still determined pressure from Germany. Ridle Baku made it 5-0 in the 67th minute after coming on as a substitute. The final goal of the evening arrived in the 79th minute from 19 year oldd debutant Assan Ouedraogo. He became the youngest player ever to score for the German national team on his debut.
The dominant win provided a sense of redemption for Germany. They suffered a 2-0 defeat to Slovakia earlier in the qualifying campaign. That unexpected loss had raised questions about the team’s consistency and direction under head coach Julian Nagelsmann. After Monday’s victory, Nagelsmann praised his squad’s performance and unity, expressing pride in how the team responded under pressure.
Defender Nico Schlotterbeck echoed this sentiment, noting that performances like this demonstrate Germany’s ability to compete with any opponent. The win secured Germany the top spot in Group A with 15 points. This victory makes them three points clear of Slovakia, who now face a playoff path in March.
This marks Germany’s 21st World Cup qualification, reinforcing their status as one of international football’s most consistent powerhouses.
After disappointing exits in recent major tournaments, the commanding victory will signal a renewed sense of purpose as they qualified.
