(The Post News)- South Africa enters Tuesday under a Yellow Level 2 severe weather alert. Unstable conditions are spreading across the central and eastern provinces. The west of the country remains hot and dry.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) reported severe thunderstorms in several regions. These storms bring the risk of hail, damaging winds, and heavy downpours.
Gauteng Residents Expected to Stay Safe
According to SAWS, Gauteng faces a uneasy weather pattern. SAWS forecaster Mpho Rasimphi stated that the atmosphere will stay unstable throughout the day. He added, moisture levels will support widespread storm activity.
“We’re still expecting a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers. These will stretch from Bethlehem all the way into Pietermaritzburg,” Rasimphi said.
He added that the same weather system is to influence the eastern parts of Gauteng. He also explained that unstable moisture in the central interior continues to drive the formation of thunderstorms and scattered showers.
Rasimphi noted that isolated rainfall will continue in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Moisture is drifting southward. This adds to the instability across the eastern half of the country.
The Yellow Level 2 warning covers much of the central and eastern provinces. This includes Gauteng, Free State, North West, and KwaZulu Natal inland. It also covers the Mpumalanga Highveld and Limpopo. Residents in these areas should prepare for strong damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours. These conditions result in localised flooding.
SAWS has encouraged the public to stay vigilant. People should avoid flood-prone low-lying areas. It’s important to watch further updates as conditions evolve throughout the day.
