(The Post News)- Paul Pogba returned to the pitch with Monaco versus Stade Rennais after a two years of ban. The match ended in 4–1 Rennais defeating Monaco. Pogba made an immediate impact, assisting his team’s lone goal and reminding fans of his quality and vision.
A Long-Awaited Comeback
Pogba, side-lined since September 2023, entered the game as a substitute and quickly showcased his playmaking abilities. His assist underlined his readiness to contribute, even after nearly two and a half years away from action.
“This night was unforgettable,” Pogba said after the match. “Stepping back onto the pitch after two years away meant more to me than I can express. To the fans, thank you for the love, the energy, and the belief. To everyone who stood behind me, supported me, and pushed me through every moment of this journey, I’m deeply grateful. This debut wasn’t just mine… It belonged to all of you who never stopped supporting me,” he said on a tweet.
The Reason Behind the Absence
Pogba’s lengthy absence was the result of a doping suspension. In September 2023, he tested positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a substance that can elevate testosterone levels. Italy’s National Anti-Doping Tribunal handed him a four-year ban, citing the standard penalties under anti-doping rules.
Pogba appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) arguing that the substance was in his system unintentionally. He stressed it was via a supplement prescribed by a U.S. doctor. CAS reduced his suspension to 18 months, backdated to September 2023, clearing the way for his March 2025 return. The tribunal acknowledged that Pogba bore some responsibility but accepted that there was no deliberate attempt to cheat.
Despite the team’s heavy defeat, Pogba’s comeback is a symbol of resilience and determination. His presence on-field, combined with his emotional acknowledgment of supporters, signals a fresh start with his team.
