Qantas' inaugural direct flight from Perth to Johannesburg takes off, marking a significant milestone in the airline's history.
(The Post News)- Qantas has launched its inaugural direct flight from Perth to Johannesburg, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s history. This new route is set to revolutionize travel between Australia and South Africa, reducing travel time to just 11 hours.
Direct Flights
The flight, operated by an Airbus A330, will run three times a week, providing a convenient option for the approximately 40,000 South Africans living in Perth, affectionately known as ‘Perthfontein’.
Former South African resident Joe Oosthuizen, who moved to Perth 17 years ago, welcomed the new route, saying it’s a “lifeline to loved ones”. He hadn’t been back to South Africa in 14 years, but the new flight makes visiting family much more practical.

Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace expressed enthusiasm for the new route, highlighting its significance for travelers. Federal Tourism Minister Don Farrell noted that direct routes like this are crucial for keeping families connected and boosting economic links between Australia and South Africa.
Travel Accessibility
The new flights will operate alongside existing Air New Zealand and South African Airways services linking Perth with Auckland and Johannesburg. Qantas has also launched a new non-stop route from Perth to Auckland, expected to bring an extra 80,000 passengers into Western Australia annually.
This expansion reinforces Qantas’ commitment to strengthening ties between Australia and South Africa. With bookings now open, travelers can enjoy a faster, more convenient option for visiting loved ones or exploring new destinations.
