(The Post News) President Donald Trump has vowed “very serious retaliation” after two US soldiers and one civilian interpreter were killed in an ambush in Syria. The attack, carried out by a single ISIS gunman, also wounded three others. Trump expressed his condolences, stating the country is mourning “the loss of the three great American patriots” and praying for the wounded, who are “doing pretty well”.
Cointer-Terrorism Operations
The incident occurred in Palmyra, central Syria, where US and Syrian forces were conducting counter-terrorism operations. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa condemned the attack, saying he’s “extremely angry and disturbed” by the incident. The US has been working with Syrian forces to combat ISIS, and al-Sharaa recently visited the White House, marking a significant shift in US-Syria relations.
The attack is the deadliest since 2019, when a blast in Manbij killed two US service members and two civilians. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that targeting Americans will result in ruthless retaliation. The US has hundreds of troops deployed in eastern Syria, part of a coalition fighting ISIS.
Syria Extend Conditions To The Victims’ Families
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished the wounded a speedy recovery. The US and Syria have been strengthening ties since the fall of the Assad regime last year.
The incident highlights the ongoing threat of ISIS in Syria, despite the group’s territorial defeat in 2019. The US remains committed to counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
Trump’s administration is in talks with Russia to end the Ukraine war, but it’s unclear how this incident might impact those discussions.
