KwaNoxolo tavern owner arrested for operating with a fraudulent liquor license after deadly mass shooting claims 10 lives in Bekkersdal, Gauteng.
The owner of KwaNoxolo tavern in Bekkersdal, Gauteng, has been arrested for operating with a fraudulent liquor license. This arrest comes after a devastating mass shooting at the tavern, which claimed 10 lives and left 10 others seriously injured.
The shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday, December 21, when at least 12 suspects, traveling in two vehicles, stormed the tavern and opened fire on patrons. Police believe the attackers may be from Lesotho, as they were heard speaking “pure Southern Sotho” and were dressed in blankets and balaclavas.
Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Fred Kekana, stated that two suspects have been identified, and police are working to track them down. Kekana urged residents to cooperate with investigators, saying, “These criminals cannot be left roaming”.
Fraudulent Operating Documents
The tavern owner had insisted her operating documents were valid, but verification with the Gauteng Liquor Board revealed the license was fraudulent. Kekana said, “The report came from the liquor board that the licence is fraudulent. As we speak now, we are going to arrest her now so she can face the music”.
Acting Gauteng Premier Jacob Mamabolo expressed confidence that police would track down all those responsible for the “heinous and brutal” killings. He assured residents that the motive behind the attack would be revealed once arrests are finalized and the suspects face trial.

The provincial government is providing support to the affected families during this difficult time. A support team will be deployed to assist the traumatized community.
Police Implement The Liquor Laws
Police confiscated the tavern’s stock, and the owner is expected to face charges related to fraud and contravention of liquor laws.
The investigation is ongoing, with police appealing to the public for any information that could lead to further arrests. Kekana emphasized that law-abiding citizens will not be intimidated by criminals.
This incident is the second mass shooting in a South African bar in three weeks, highlighting concerns about gun violence and tavern safety.
The community is urged to assist police in their investigations, with a call for military intervention in Bekkersdal due to escalating crime.
The motive behind the attack is still unclear, but police are working to uncover the truth.
