Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, who was killed in a plane crash in western India. The private plane, which was carrying five people, including Mr Pawar, crashed in an open field, leaving no survivors.
Plane Crash in Maharashtra State Claims Lives
The aircraft, a mid-size Learjet 45, was travelling from Mumbai, India’s financial capital, to Baramati, Mr Pawar’s home city, when it crashed. The reason for the crash is not immediately known, but witnesses reported that the plane slammed into the field and burst into flames.
Ajit Pawar: A Key Figure in State Politics
Mr Pawar, 66, was a key figure in Maharashtra state politics and was part of Mr Modi’s ruling coalition. He was influential in the state’s sugar belt and was known for his ability to mobilise rural voters. Mr Modi described Mr Pawar as a “widely respected” and “hardworking personality”.
Tributes Pour in for Ajit Pawar
In a post on X, Mr Modi expressed his sadness at Mr Pawar’s death, saying “His understanding of administrative matters and passion for empowering the poor and downtrodden were also noteworthy”. He also shared photos of the pair and offered condolences to Mr Pawar’s family and admirers.
Investigation Underway into Plane Crash
Two of Mr Pawar’s staff and two crew members were also killed in the crash, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
