(The Post News)- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed victory over the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria. Netanyahu attributes the current situation to the impact of Israel’s actions against Iran and Hezbollah, which are key backers of the Assad regime.
According to Netanyahu, the Assad regime is a central link in Iran’s axis of evil, and its fall is a direct result of the blows inflicted on Iran and Hezbollah. He pointed to over 14 months of fighting against Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and other Iranian-backed groups since October 7 of the previous year.
Netanyahu’s statement came after rebels announced they had seized Damascus, effectively ending over five decades of Assad family rule. The Israeli prime minister hailed the jihadist takeover of Syria as a “historic day in the Middle East”.
While highlighting new opportunities, Netanyahu acknowledges the risks associated with Assad’s possible departure from Syria. “Our primary objective is to safeguard our border,” he states. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have been directed to seize control of the buffer zone, stressing that Israel will not allow hostile forces to establish themselves on its border.
Netanyahu also emphasized Israel’s commitment to humanitarian aid, recalling the country’s “Good Neighbor” policy during the peak of the Syrian civil war. “Hundreds of Syrian children were born here in Israel,” he remarks. Israel is extending a hand of peace to Druze, Kurds, Christians, and Muslims in Syria.
