(The Post News)- The Blitzboks claimed their first Cape Town Sevens title since 2015, defeating France 26-14 in a thrilling final on Sunday. The victory capped a weekend of resilience and determination, as the Springbok Sevens fought their way back to the top in front of a passionate home crowd.
Shilton van Wyk was instrumental in the win, scoring twice in the second half to break the deadlock. After falling behind early, South Africa rallied with tries from Donavan Don and captain Zain Davids, taking a narrow lead into halftime. Dewald Human’s playmaking and Van Wyk’s blistering speed proved too much for the French defence, with David Brits adding the decisive try.
This victory marks a significant moment for the Blitzboks, who last won a title in 2020. It also propels them to third in the HSBC World SVNS standings, level with France on 30 points. For coach Philip Snyman, the win is a testament to the team’s rebuilding efforts after challenging seasons.
From overcoming Spain in the semi-final to silencing the in-form French side, the Blitzboks showcased their trademark resilience. The home title brings hope for a new chapter in South African Sevens rugby, with the team aiming to build on this success in the upcoming tournaments.
