(The Post News)- Real Madrid resumed their Champions League title defense following Tuesday’s thrilling 3-2 victory over a determined Atalanta. In a fiercely competitive match in Bergamo, goals from Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham were just enough to give Madrid the victory and raise their record to nine points from six games.
With a tough test against Serie A leaders Atalanta, Carlo Ancelotti’s team would have been in danger of falling out of the play-off spots. With two games left in their league campaign and a round of fixtures approaching on Wednesday, the away team is now three points outside of the top eight spots, which guarantee direct qualification for the round of 16.
Madrid handed Atalanta their first loss in the redesigned competition this year, and they are now just two points below Gian Piero Gasperini’s aspirational squad, who played well against the 15-time European winners but are currently in ninth place. After goals from Vinicius and Bellingham, Atalanta pulled even with a penalty kick from Charles De Ketelaere in the first half stoppage time and a brilliant goal from Ademola Lookman in the 65th minute.
Deep into extra time, the home team even came within inches of securing a thrilling draw when substitute Retegui managed to shoot over Lookman’s spectacular cross from almost on the goal line.
