(The Post News)- Residents of Tswinga and Tshitomboni outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo are shocked after finding thousands of dead fish floating in the Nandoni Dam. Provincial authorities say they have collected samples for analysis. Philip Munyai, a community leader, is awaiting the results.
Munyai says, “Indeed, there are a lot of dead fish – enough to fill three bakkies. This is a warning to community members because people are allowed to fish, but once you see a dead fish, how can you take it? You don’t know what killed the fish.” Yesterday, the Department of Water Affairs came to take water samples for laboratory examination.
Munyai further adds that they don’t know the results yet, but they can’t wait for them. He warns residents not to eat or touch the dead fish.
One hawker says they are very worried but relieved that they don’t sell the types of fish that are dead. Another hawker is worried that selling fish was their source of income, and they are now unable to sell the dead fish.
The Department of Water and Sanitation has launched an investigation into the matter. Wisani Mabasa, the department’s spokeswoman, says the Department of Water and Sanitation is investigating an incident of dead fish at the Nandoni Dam, along the Dididi bridge up to Tshitomboni Village.
The department also says they were alerted to the dead fish floating on the water course on Thursday evening and has sent teams to investigate and collect water samples at different sites around the area of occurrence to determine the cause of the dead fish.
