(The Post News)– The Sharks’ Champions Cup campaign ended in disaster as they were dismantled 66–12 by Union Bordeaux Bègles in their final pool match on Sunday. Bordeaux winger Damian Penaud was unstoppable, scoring an incredible six tries and leaving the Sharks helpless to contain him.
Despite a promising start, with Siya Masuku and Hakeem Kunene scoring early tries, the Sharks’ defence fell apart, allowing Bordeaux to run riot. By the 54th minute, Bordeaux had already surpassed the 28-point margin the Sharks needed to stay in the competition.
Bordeaux’s relentless attack, led by Penaud, saw additional tries from Maxime Lucu, Ugo Boniface, Yoram Moefana, and Jacques Nguimbous, sealing the Sharks’ fate. Struggling in scrums, mauls, and lineouts, the Sharks failed to gain any control, despite brief early dominance.
This defeat drops the Sharks to fifth in the pool, relegating them to the Challenge Cup’s round of 16, where they can take some comfort in their previous victory in the tournament last season.
