(The Post News)– On Monday and Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed executive decrees in an effort to terminate federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This came after he declared on Monday, during his inaugural address, that his administration aims to establish a merit-based and colorblind society.
The signing of the decrees was followed by a directive issued on Tuesday evening by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management ordering that all federal DEI employees be put on paid leave by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday. Quoting CBS News reports on X, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, confirmed the move. The memo had several demands, such as the elimination of DEI offices’ public webpages and social media accounts, as well as a written plan from federal agencies for letting go of the employees to be submitted by January 31.
According to Trump’s administration officials, the decrees reduced financing for DEI initiatives across all agencies to put an end to DEI within the federal government. Moreover, the decrees also revoke several executive orders and initiatives by previous administrations that sought to improve diversity within the federal government.
Meanwhile, Trump has stated that he will instruct the Office of Management and Budget to terminate any projects that advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion inside departments as well as all associated mandates, policies, and programs across agencies. Officials have stated that Trump’s goal is to reinstate what the administration views as a merit-based employment process, and he will continue to work to eliminate any evidence of DEI in the government.
To determine how continuing DEI initiatives are purportedly discriminating against Americans, Trump officials and Justice Department personnel will meet with several departments on a monthly basis to find ways to end them. Additionally, Trump is ordering the secretary general to come up with a strategy to prevent the private sector from implementing or sustaining DEI initiatives.
