(The Post News)- Donald Trump has reportedly settled his lawsuit against Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, for $25 million. The lawsuit was filed in 2021 after Meta suspended Trump’s social media accounts following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Meta initially suspended Trump and later announced that he would be banned from the platform for at least two years due to posts that incited violence and posed a threat to public safety
Trump argued that Meta’s actions violated his First Amendment right to free speech and engaged in “illegal, unconstitutional censorship.” He also filed complaints with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, requesting the court to overturn Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects social media companies from liability for content posted on their platforms.
As part of the settlement, $22 million will be allocated to a fund for Trump’s presidential library, while the remaining amount will cover legal fees and be distributed among other plaintiffs in the case. This settlement represents a significant moment in the ongoing debate over free speech on social media, with implications for how tech companies handle political figures in the future.
