(The Post News)– Liverpool humiliated Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Anfield, giving the Premier League leaders a 4-1 aggregate triumph. After leading 1-0 going into the match, Spurs failed to muster a single shot on goal, and commentators Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp harshly blasted their collapse.
Liverpool secured a position in the final against Newcastle on March 16 thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Virgil van Dijk. Spurs had nothing to say after the loss because they couldn’t match Liverpool’s superiority.
Redknapp, a former Spurs midfielder, described Tottenham’s performance as “horrendous” and “shocking,” lamenting their lack of fight. He remarked, “Not having one shot on target in a semi-final when you’re trying to change the course of your history? It’s just unacceptable.” He also pointed out the struggles of Spurs’ young players, like Djed Spence and Archie Grey, adding that the experienced players failed to lead by example.
When questioned about Redknapp’s criticism, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou said, “My job is to manage this football club.” It doesn’t matter what people think or don’t think. I’m not bothered by it. Carragher, on the other hand, mentioned Spurs’ past difficulties in crucial games to convey his lack of confidence in them finishing the job.
He suggested that Tottenham’s inability to overcome challenges is part of their DNA, citing their lucky win against Ajax in the 2019 Champions League as one of their rare big-game victories. He also drew a comparison to Accrington Stanley’s performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup earlier this year, saying, “Accrington Stanley caused Liverpool more problems than Tottenham did.”
The performance also drew criticism from former Spurs defender Michael Dawson, who observed that Postecoglou appeared isolated on the touchline, adding that the team’s senior players, particularly captain Heung-Min Son, needed to step up. With 11 players sidelined due to injury, including Richarlison, Spurs’ struggles are mounting, and Postecoglou’s position continues to come under scrutiny. As Tottenham’s disappointing season drags on, the questions around the team’s leadership and direction only grow louder.
