(The Post News)– A body of a woman in her 50s was found in a river in Pinetown. According to reports, the woman died after her car was swept off a bridge.
The incident occurred on Sarnia Road in Pinetown, west of Durban, and according to the Advanced Life Support paramedics’ spokesperson Gareth Jamieson, the woman sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased by paramedics on the scene.
Jamieson stated that the woman’s car, which rescue personnel and the fire department recovered successfully, was found not far from Gordon Road. Additionally, Jamieson urged residents to avoid nonessential travel to avoid getting stuck on flooded roads or bridges.
Meanwhile, the Durban Metro Police posted on their Facebook page about M19 Westbound being flooded and several cars stuck in the water. A local security company, Blue Security, has also warned about the heavy rains, noting that the torrential rain was widespread, with Kloof among the worst affected areas receiving 210 mm in a short amount of time.
According to Blue Security, the timing of the storm caused chaos, as many residents were caught in the rain while picking their children from school or travelling from work to home. The company further stated that in Stapleton Road alone, floodwaters swept away cars, while in other areas vehicles became trapped in mud and debris in various locations.
Moreover, the company noted that community leaders, together with rescue personnel from various organisations, were “on the ground assisting wherever possible,” opening roads, evaluating drivers, and trying to free stranded vehicles to ensure community people could get to safety. Search and rescue operations were paused last night due to unsafe conditions but were expected to resume early this morning.
