(The Post News)– A 33-year-old Brazilian woman has been arrested at Cape Town International Airport after being found in possession of cocaine hidden inside a sports bag.
It is reported that authorities received information about a suspect who boarded a flight from Brazil to Cape Town. According to Hawks spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi, upon further investigation with Cape Town International Airport Border Police and Customs, Department of Home Affairs officials and Plattekloof Forensic Science Laboratory members, it was established that she had swallowed an unknown amount of drug pellets.
Vukubi said. Vukubi stated that the woman has been hospitalised in an effort to extract the swallowed drug pellets. The suspect is expected to make her first court appearance on March 18 after she has been charged. Vukubi further asserted that the estimated street value of drugs has not yet been determined.
Meanwhile, according to reports, law enforcement has arrested multiple drug mule suspects in Johannesburg who were also travelling from Brazil. Furthermore, some reports have revealed that earlier this month, inspection of a shipment of boxes listed as hair products en route from São Paulo yielded cocaine worth an estimated R6m at OR Tambo International Airport.
On the other hand, last month, a man and a woman were arrested on drug trafficking charges after the seizure of cocaine with an estimated street value of R7.5m. National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola has promised to clamp down on drugs entering the country.
