(The Post News)– British rider, Matthew Brennan, edges out Del Grosso in thrilling finish to claim first stage. Brennan powered to victory in the opening stage of the Tour of Catalonia on Monday, outpacing Tibor del Grosso in a dramatic sprint to the finish.
The 19-year-old Visma rider conquered the 178.3-kilometre stage, which started and ended in Sant Feliu de Guixols, despite relentless rain making conditions tough.
Brennan, fresh off his maiden professional win at the GP de Denain, showcased his sprinting prowess once again, crossing the line in just over four hours and 25 minutes. “Winning in these conditions makes it even more special,” he reflected after the race. Alpecin-Deceuninck’s Kaden Groves secured second place, while his teammate Del Grosso, who looked set for victory after a late surge, had to settle for third.
With defending champion Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard absent, Primoz Roglic and Tirreno-Adriatico winner Juan Ayuso are the leading contenders for the overall title. The race continues on Tuesday with stage two, a 177.3-kilometer route from Banyoles to Figueres.
